For our transmission conversions we like to use the shifters listed below as each have a distinct reason and feel. Depending on your application one may be better suited than another. Lets run through the differences and find the best shifter for you!
Kilduff Performance Shifters for the 6L80/6L90
Specifically designed for the 6Lxx transmission this also has the slap shifter switches built in or as GM calls it TUTD for Tap Up Tap Down. These switches will need some additional electronic hardware to function but the shifter does have one pice of the puzzle to make the TUTD operate which is the set of switches.
This BMW Steptronic shifter is similar to the Lokar shifter above except is a little lower profile and accepts BMW snap down shift knobs and some nice suede or leather shift boots. A bit more classy than the racey look of the Lokar, This has a non-removeable manual shift cable that attaches to the selector arm on the side of your transmission to move the linkage between Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive. Once in drive you can then pull the shifter to the left which is now in the steptronic mode. This mode has the +/- selections which will upshift or downshift the transmission one gear at a time. It has switches built in that our computer can read for each position. It can be used for the manual valve body style systems and be combined with an auto-shifting style system as well. This shifter does not allow multi-gear selections like a 5th to 3rd in one shot, it can only be used for one gear increments at a time. Keep in mind it can be used to get a project running and then upgrad to another shifter later if desired.
The SMG/DCT shifters were used in mainly the BMW M cars. They are a great feeling shifter within a small package. They do not have a shift cable that moves a linkage on the side of the transmission. These are purely electronic. We would set up an Ebrake handle to move the transmission linkage for Park in up position and Drive in down position. Then the Reverse and upshift/downshift can be done with this shifter. These do come with light up shift knob capabilities so are really a nice piece to add to an interior of a restomod. These do not have the multi-gear shift capability stock but we can modify the Gate underneathe to make these a full 6 speed H pattern. Hit us up as for the mod service if you need the lowest profile H pattern like the C6 corvette we designed these to fit in with the H pattern.

The Fanatec brand SQ shifter is a =/- shifter in one mode. Then you can slide a lever on the side and it now turns into an H-pattern shifter for access to all the gears like a manual transmission! This is a simulator designed shifter but we install these right in the cars and have them control your automatic transmission. These do not have a manual shift cable linkage so either a second lever would be needed, which is the mechanical way around it, or we install a servo motor in our computer to control the linkage and it does all positions for you. These need to be calibrated per vehicle so we would need to install and program these in house here at our shop. These are great for normally driven vehicles and best for autocross or road racing style events where multi-gear shifts would be needed. We also incorporate sequential downshift assistance into these. Give us a call and we can explain more.
